So has anyone gone and tested the free internet on blackberry phones, we have them at the office however are you able to connect them to a PC for free internet?

The guys at our office use the "free" internet portion exclusively on the phone, i am thinking about connecting it to my laptop for complete free internet. Another question is how is this possible, as your using a service provider such as voda or mtn for data?

Hi

As far as I know internet is free on a blackberry BUT its works ONLY on the blackberry web browser NOT if you plug it into your laptop or pc. Then you will be charged the normal R2.00 per mb or what ever. Its got something to do with the way the browser is programmed and the way it works is you buy a special BLACKBERRY DATA BUNDLE from voda or mtn.

Thats as much as I know. Hope it helps

Anyone have a blackberry who can do some traffic sniffing? If it's something simple like user-agent/proxy based then it'll be easy matter of replicating this in Firefox :)

Code a browser detection site (1 LoC), browse to it on your Blackberry, then spoof your User-Agent?

We are not going the right way with the user-agent theory. The reason behind me saying this is because I got a Blackberry to connect to a custom PHP page so that I could get the user-agent, IP and also a tracepath back to the Blackberry.

I got the standard Blackberry user-agent but realised afterward that most Blackberries have a setting where you could specify the user-agent. The one I looked at had three user-agents(Mozilla, Vodaphone and Blackberry) to choose from.

I think the free internet is based on multiple variables(PIN, MAC,{add more here}).

I have tried to use the blackberry service on my SE X1 XPERIA it came pre loaded with the Blackberry service and Blackberry Connect app on it.

I noticed that the service assigned my device an IP address (other than the normal ones to expect)
and a blackberry PIN

And i noticed it uses its own "Network" setting named blackberry connect

The settings were:

APN: Blackberry.net
Username: rim
Password: password
IP Address: 206.51.26.189
Remote Port: 19781
Local Port: 19780

Hope u guys can do smtng with all that :)

It is possible to connect phones to laptops for free internet using GNUbox : http://www.digitaltube.net/ipod-cellpho ... -beta.html

A bluetooth AP is created on the laptop and then GNUbox is connected to the AP via virtual serial/com port. I have tested this on symbian nokia 6110 with success. I have not done so on a blackberry but I think it can be done

Cant find the forum where there was a long debate about this. the problem was that blackberry assigns a specific pin to the browser that corresponds with the IMEI no. of the phone. when u try it through a computer the pin isnt found and the result is u're charged per meg. :|
